Private Residential, Shanghai

working for BDP

This luxury residential development alongside the Xiepi River in Shanghai comprised almost 100 houses of varying grades. It was necessary to balance the client brief for an ‘English Garden’ with size and access issues, with basement courtyards almost 4m in depth. The gardens are divided into different zones in order to increase their apparent size and mid-level seating areas were created by using access to the deep courtyards to advantage. The development is surrounded by water which continues through the estate by means of man-made water courses. This is carried through the gardens by designing in focal water features. Privacy is a luxury in Shanghai and it was important to have relatively tall boundary fences and front entrances shielded from the street by layers of planting.
