Brown Hart Gardens, Mayfair
working for BDP
This newly restored roof terrace within the heart of Mayfair was designed for Grosvenor to be a flexible, contemporary but sympathetic addition to the public realm. Situated above a Victorian sub-station, surrounded by red-brick buildings, the space was designed to accommodate private events as well public use. Trees chosen for the deck edge perimeter are Koelreuteria paniculata (Pride of India), a unique choice for an urban environment but one which should thrive on the warm roof of this Victorian sub-station – these will be installed after surrounding construction works have ended. The golden yellow late summer and autumn colour will enhance the bronze and Portland stone details of the café and fixed furniture, as well as the surrounding buildings. Planting within the central moveable planters was chosen for year-round rich colour. The interchangeable design of the pots is intended for the gardeners to supplement this planting with more tender, seasonable species.
